Poul Henningsen – Artichoke Pendant Lamps

Artichoke Pendant Light, Quality counts

Poul Henningsen – Iconic designer lighting from the 1950′s

Poul Henningsen began to experiment with light from the young age of 18, and famously stated that he’d been “searching for harmony in lighting” ever since. Born in 1894 in Ordrup, Denmark, he soon became one of Denmark’s key authoritarians in lighting theory.

Poul was not only applauded for his lamps, but he also studied at the Technical School and the Danish College of Technology, Copenhagen. From 1920, he spent time as an architect in Copenhagen, where he designed several houses, a factory, a part of Tivoli, and the interiors of two theatres.

As well as this, Poul Henningsen wrote many newspaper articles, theatre reviews, and poems, as well as editing “Kritisk Revy” (Critical Revue). Those who liked his work did so for his no holds barred critiques of society and architecture.
He stated that, “Human beings are like children. As soon as they get new toys they trough away their culture and the orgy starts. The electric light gave the possibility of wallowing in light.

“

Poul Henningsen used to regularly drive through Copenhagen and feel extremely disappointed at what he saw in the homes he passed, describing them as “dismal”.  He said, “Furniture, style, carpets, everything in the home is unimportant compared to the positioning of the lighting. It doesn’t cost money to light a room correctly, but it does require culture.”

Poul firmly believed that lighting the home correctly is one of the most significant ways to make an impact on its atmosphere and ambience.

In 1924 Poul Henningsen designed his multi-shade lamp, which later became known as the “PH-lamp”. Designed after detailed analysis of a lampshade’s function, the PH-lamp won a competition in 1924 at the Paris World Exhibition, and is now known as the “Paris lamp”.
Poul Henningsen’s cleverly constructed lampshades are made of separate elements, shaped and assembled to cover the bulb and direct light down upon the table without allowing the rays to be reflected more than once. They give a soft and even glow to the room, with no sharp or obvious differences between light diffusion.
To bring the glaring white light towards the red end of the spectrum, Henningsen gave the inside of part of the lampshade a red hue.
He had fond memories of growing up in the gentle glow of the petroleum lamp. His constant inspiration and aim was to cultivate the electric light to achieve a similar softness and warm ambience.

We’ll leave our last words to Poul. “I do not subscribe to the idea of an ever-increasing demand for more powerful lighting intensity. It is tempting, but inartistic to continue to increase lighting intensity.”

Interior Addict whole heartedly agree.

Barcelona Chair Reproduction or Original

October 1st, 2010

An iconic piece of designer classic furniture, the epitome of form and function, the phrase which is so often used when describing early and mid-century furniture classics, whether it is from the likes of Florence Knoll, Marcel Breuer or Arne Jacobsen these pieces are in our opinion a piece of art, created by geniuses to last a life time in Interior Design. Whether it is for the home or for commercial settings the Barcelona Lounge Chair and many of Ludwig Mie’s Van Der Rohe other designs cast a dominant talking piece for any room.

The Barcelona chair was originally designed in 1929, and was built from only the highest quality materials, Interior Addict are meticulous on providing this kind of workmanship and quality to our customers.

The Frame.

Two sections of rolled 12mm thick 304 stainless steel are curved by heavy rollers to perfection and then crossed, welded and polished to create the base. The base is then highly polished by craftsman to a flawless finish. Leather hide straps are then riveted on the frames to make a base for the proposed cushions.

Leather

Interior Addict only upholster their furniture in the highest quality leather imported from Italy into the Far East before manufacturing, with a selection of colours and semi-aniline or full aniline we are sure there is a finish to match your requirements.

Cushions

Made up of individually sewn panels, finished with piping; all sections of this cushion are leather apart from the fabric back centre panel sections. Most cheaper models of this reproduction have PU sides, which will eventually crack or fade with use. Cushions are then finished with a button, which are the exact size of the American Dime, as per the original.

Internally cushions are high-density polyurethane foam with a thin man made wadding for extra comfort, all materials use are up to UK fire retardant safety standards.

Packaging, all of Interior Addicts quality furniture items are packed for would wide delivery, the frames and covers are covered to retain its flawless finish, the item is then placed in its card board box and kept in place and supported with polystyrene. The cardboard box is then packed into slated ply or full plywood box to really keep the item protected in transport.

One Big Family, 11 Brothers

June 15th, 2010

This summer, one of the most renowned houses opens its doors one last time. The last medley of hopeful housemates wanting their summer of fame, walk into the illusive Big Brother house, that is bound for demolition.

Long gone are the days of Big Brother 1, back in the year 2000, with Craig winning victoriously on the last day, of a long and prosperous reality TV hype. For the next decade, reality TV ruled the screens, and with it, came an uproar in interior design. Series after series, the Big Brother creators had to build a new and more interesting house, with even more extravagant designer furniture.

Already featured in the hit series the Verner Panton Side Chair, designed in 1968. It’s exciting and playful feel, made from one single piece of material, flows elegantly to provide a fun, feel good feel! However, probably the most iconic piece of classic designer furniture to be featured on the show is the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair – the very first Big Brother Diary room chair from series one. However, following the unveiling of the new series 11 advert after Davina McCall’s new show The Million Pound Drop, in which we saw this modern icon buried, will we ever see it again?

The question remains, what could be the diary room chair and interior furniture for the new series? I think the Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair would be a fantastic Big Brother 11 diary room chair. With unforgettable original design that pushes the boundaries of contemporary furniture design, I can imagine the contestants nominating and undergoing Big Brother’s mind games sitting in this piece.

But what about the living area sofa, one of the most seen, used and iconic pieces of big brother furniture. I think that the George Nelson Marshmallow Sofa would be a fantastic Big Brother 11 sofa. Its striking look is still as modern today as when it was designed in 1956.

I also think the George Nelson Eye Wall Clock, would also not be out of place in the Big Brother dwelling. Based on the 1950s design, this wall clock is remarkably similar to the Big Brother logo, maybe they took inspiration from this designer clock classic.

However, only one thing is certain, I’m sure the Big Brother house will be as extravagant, strange and unique as the hopefully contestants.

What came first the floor lamp or the egg? Regardless, both still shine in the 21st century

June 15th, 2010

Arne Jacobsen was one of Denmark’s most influential 20th century designers. Conceiving iconic classics such as the swan and egg chairs, his eye for design was truly exception, combining modernist ideals with a Nordic love of naturalism. From basic roots as an apprentice bricklayer, he rose through the ranks winning a place to study architecture at the Royal Academy of the Arts in 1924. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Jacobsen became increasingly interested in product design. Seeking his inspiration from designers such as Charles Eames and Ray Eames, highly influenced his work.

Jacobsen continues to be famous for his interior classics with sleek designs such as the oxford office chair and the iconic lighting classic the Arne Jacobsen floor lamp. Jacobsen’s legacy continues with his contemporary classic the egg chair. Designed by Jacobsen in 1956 and is probably one of the most iconic pieces of modern designer furniture of the 20th century. Jacobsen’s egg chair is widely recognized for being the original Big Brother series on Channel 4, the diary room chair in series 1.  The Jacobsen egg chair is the epiphany of sheer indulgence and astonishing elegance

Jacobsen’s egg chair was originally designed for the Royal SAS Hotel (Copenhagen), the flawlessly sculptured egg chair has a fluid form that required minimum padding and was lightweight without compromising on comfort. However it has continued to be used throughout and even still in the 21st century. Not only has the egg chair proven popular in Big Brother and throughout the world, Jacobsen’s series seven chairs have also appeared in Eastenders!

Nearly 40 years since Jacobsen died, only one thing is certain. His elegant, modern day furniture is still as modern today, as when the day it was born from the egg…
